Some high school students have potential, but lack motivation. They may not display disruptive behavior, but they still require a special program to succeed academically. Camelot has tapped into special needs of those students by developing comprehensive accelerated high school programs for the School Districts of Philadelphia, Camden and Lancaster, PA.
Camelot’s two Excel Academies in Philadelphia provide the first program of this kind authorized by the District to address the growing problem of overage, under credentialed, at risk high school students - termed "near dropout" students. Students who enroll at Excel must be at least 16 years of age and have two or fewer accumulated credits toward graduation. Excel offers the full complement of courses needed for students to acquire the 23.5 credits the District for graduation.
Once enrolled, students receive an individualized and accelerated curriculum designed to keep them engaged in school. Camelot provides them with a curriculum framework that enables them to graduate in 2.5 years or less.
The Excel class of 2011 boasted 380 graduates. Most were accepted into post-secondary programs, including college, vocational school and the military. Excel’s Program Goals are:
- To increase student academic achievement
- To raise student attendance
- To create and maintain a safe and orderly learning environment
- To prepare students to meet state and District graduation requirements
To provide students with the necessary skills and support to enroll in a post-secondary institution, certification program, or trade school and obtain gainful, self-sufficient employment
