Camelot of Virginia

Camelot of Virginia has 6 Residential Group Homes in the state of Virginia. They are located in the cities of Radford, Christiansburg, Pilot, Wytheville and Roanoke. One of the Christiansburg Virginia Group Homes specializes in Transitional Living for older adolescents who are aging out of the foster care system.

 

STAFF

A low student-to-teacher/counselor ratio is essential to a child's progress. Our experienced and highly skilled staff works closely with each child to develop their full potential for academic achievement and mastery of critical life skills.

  • Program director possesses a baccalaureate degree and extensive experience working in a residential setting
  • Child care counselors, chosen for their interpersonal skills and experience, provide direct care and supervision
  • All counselors receive 120 hours training prior to working with residents
  • Licensed or licensed eligible therapists provide individual, group, and family therapies

 

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

An academic program is provided at the Camelot Therapeutic Day School located a short drive away in Pulaski, Virginia. The curriculum is based on the requirements set by the Virginia Standards of Learning and provides courses in:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • History
  • Social Studies

Multi-sensory, colorful, highly interactive materials, and manipulatives are utilized whenever possible. Traditional textbook teaching is augmented with hands-on experiences, community outings, and activities.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

At Camelot we believe in the promise of every child. By providing plenty of one-on-one support and attention, we are able to help each and every child create a future they could not imagine or achieve on their own. Children are individually assessed and given customized treatment plans to meet their specific needs with appropriate staffing to assure adherence to individualized treatment plans and the highest level of safety.

  • individual and group therapy are provided at least once per week
  • Family therapy is provided at least once every two weeks
  • Alcohol and drug education groups are held once per week
  • Other education groups focusing on anger management, building appropriate relationships, and problem solving are provided at least seven times per week
  • Recreational groups and outings are conducted throughout the week
  • Equine Experiential Learning Program offered and encouraged

 

Radford

Camelot of Virginia's Radford Campus is located in a small southwest Virginia city 45 minutes southwest of Roanoke, Virginia. The campus is set in the midst of the lovely Blue Ridge Mountains where, each day, adolescents are greeted with breathtaking views. The campus is near the downtown area of Radford with easy access to libraries, schools and recreation areas.

Camelot's Radford Group Home is undergoing licensing changes in order to provide residential services to an extremely underserved population. Once the approval is received, Camelot's Radford Group Home will focus on the treatment of adolescent males, ages 12-17, with a lower level of functioning and IQs in the 40-60 range. Camelot's Radford Group Home will provide specialized treatment for those adolescent males in need of services due to cognitive, behavioral or emotional illness that prevents the child from productive and pro-social funtioning in the family, at school, with peers, and/or within the community.

FACILITIES / AMENITIES

The 8-bedroom Radford Group Home is a beautiful, ranch-style home with four large bedrooms, each accommodating two children. The house provides two living areas along with a study area with computer access. A family-style kitchen and dining area provide a wonderful, home-like feel. Upon their arrival, residents are accompanied to a local store, where they can pick out their bedspreads and linens to personalize their rooms at Camelot's expense. A wonderful screened-in back porch and an abundance of windows allow children to enjoy the outdoors anytime of the year.

 

Wytheville

Camelot of Virginia's Wytheville Campus is located in a small southwest Virginia town one hour southwest of Roanoke, Virginia. The campus is set in the midst of the lovely Blue Ridge Mountains where, each day, adolescents are greeted with breathtaking views. Wytheville is a progressive town with the amenities of a much larger community. The campus is in the downtown area of Wytheville with easy access to libraries, schools and recreation areas.

Camelot's Wytheville Group Home specializes in treatment of adolescent males, ages 12 to 17, with an IQ of 60 and above. Camelot provides specialized treatment for adolescents in need of either step-down or step-up services due to mental, behavioral, or emotional illness that prevents the child from productive and pro-social functioning in the family, at school, with peers, and/or within the community.

FACILITIES / AMENITIES

The 8-bedroom Wytheville Group Home is a beautiful, two-story home built around 1860. The home was once called the Walnut Inn and served travelers as a hotel for many years. Today, it is a wonderfully remodeled home with four large bedrooms, each accommodating two children.

The house provides two living areas along with a separate study area with computer access. A family-style kitchen and dining area provide a wonderful, home-like feel. Upon their arrival, residents are accompanied to a local store, where they can pick out their bedspreads and linens to personalize their rooms at Camelot's expense. An outdoor basketball court is available for on-site recreation.


Christiansburg

Camelot of Virginia's Christiansburg campus is located in the heart of the New River Valley, just minutes from Virginia Tech. The campus is near the downtown area of Christiansburg and reflects progressive small town living at its best with easy access to libraries, schools, and recreation areas.

Camelot's Christiansburg campus specializes in treatment of adolescent males, ages 12 to 17, with an IQ of 70 and above. Camelot provides specialized treatment for adolescents in need of either step-down or step-up services due to mental, bahavioral, or emotional illness that prevents the child from productive and pro-social functioning in the family, at school, with peers, and/or within the community

FACILITIES / AMENITIES

The 16-bed Christiansburg group home is located on a 17 acre site adjacent to the new Town of Christiansburg indoor Aquatics Center (opening fall of '08). The facility's modern construction provides 8 bedrooms, each accommodating two children, a common living area and study area with computer access. Upon their arrival, residents are accompanied to a local store, where they can pick out their bedspreads and linens to personalize their rooms at Camelot's expense.

The Christiansburg facility also houses the grand forum, an extraordinary, circular area similar to a totunda, with high ceilings, polished hard wood floors and seating. The openness and abundance of natural light flowing from nearby and overhead windows creates an ideal location for group therapy and other education groups conducted throughout the week.

Next door to the living facility and attached by a covered walk-way is the kitchen and dining area. The dining area doubles as a recreation area with its stone fireplace, comfortable seating and game tables. The dining area gives way to a beautiful view of the ground's gazebo and green house. An outdoor basketball court is also available for on-site recreation.

 

Pilot

Camelot of Virginia's Pilot campus is located in a rural Floyd County community nestled deep in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Its 75 acre campus presents adolescent residents with breathtaking views and an opportunity to commune with nature while still being just a few minutes from downtown Christiansburg with easy access to public libraries, schools and recreation facilities.

Camelot's Pilot campus specializes in treatment of adolescent females, ages 12 to 17 with an IQ of 70 or above. Camelot provides specialized treatment for adolescents in need of either step-down or step-up services due to mental, behavioral, or emotional illness that prevents the child from productive and pro-social functioning in the family, at school, with peers, and/or within the community.

The 16-bed Pilot group home is a beautiful, ranch-style home with 8 bedrooms, each accommodating two children. Upon their arrival, residents are accompanied to a local store, where they can pick out their bedspreads and linens to personalize their rooms at Camelot's expense. The house itself provides two living areas along with a study area with computer access. The dining area doubles as a recreation area with its stone fireplace, comfortable seating and game tables.

In addition to the residential facility, the Pilot campus also has a fully-equipped barn with up to eight horses and two riding rings. The barn is home of the Equine Experiential Learning Program, an integral part of the Camelot of Virginia's programming. Residents from every Camelot of Virginia group home have the opportunity to partcipate in equine facilitated mental health activities under the guidance of trained, professionally registered staff at our Pilot campus. Working with animals donated through the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and local horse enthusiasts, residents learn to care for horses and gain pro-social attitudes through care-giving experiences.

Additional outdoor activities available at the Pilot campus include the following: volleyball, basketball, gardening, nature walks, hiking and biking.

 

Roanoke

Camelot of Virginia's Roanoke Campus is located in the beautiful, historical city of Roanoke, tucked deep in the lovely, Roanoke Valley. The campus's downtown location provides easy access to libraries, schools and recreation areas.

Camelot's Roanoke Group Home specializes in treatment of adolescent males, ages 12 to 17, with an IQ as low as 60. Camelot provides specialized treatment for adolescents in need of either step-down or step-up services due to mental, behavioral, or emotional illness that prevents the child from productive and pro-social functioning in the family, at school, with peers, and/or within the community.

FACILITIES / AMENITIES

The 8-bedroom Roanoke Group Home is a beautiful, three-story home built in 1920 and listed on the National Historic registry. It is a wonderfully remodeled home with four bedrooms. The house provides two living areas along with a study area with computer access. A family-style kitchen and dining area provide a wonderful, home-like feel. Upon their arrival, residents are accompanied to a local store, where they can pick out their bedspreads and linens to personalize their rooms at Camelot's expense. The abundance of windows in this home allows for children to view high ridges even when living in a downtown neighborhood.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Education services are determined prior to admission, as this facility does not provide education on-site. Camelot may seek out providers of alternative education in the Roanoke area on a case-by-case basis.

 

Christiansburg Transitional Living

Camelot of Virginia's Christiansburg Transitional Living Facility is located in the heart of New River Valley, just minutes from Virginia Tech. The campus is in the downtown area of Christiansburg and reflects progressive small town living at its best with easy access to libraries, schools, and recreation areas.

Camelot's Christiansburg Transitional Living facility specializes in transitional living for adolescent girls ages 14-21. This facility provides transition services for adolescent girls who are aging out of foster care or who have successfully completed a residential program.

Camelot's Christiansburg Transitional Living Facility is designed to foster a sense of competency in managing all aspects of living. Our goal is to provide children in our care with the services and treatment needed to meet their needs while at the same time helping them develop the skills necessary to live safely and successfully in their home communities. Targeted skills include daily hygiene, housekeeping skills, knowledge of budgeting/financial planning, and vocational training.

Residents at our Transitional Livig Facility are encouraged to attend college, hold jobs, allowed to date and own a car while being closely supervised by experienced and highly skilled staff focused on helping the chld develop their ful potential and mastery of critical life skills.

The 6-bed Christiansburg Group Home is a beautiful, two-story home with 3 bedrooms, each accommodating two young ladies. The house provides two separate living areas aloing with a study area with computer access. A family-style kitchen and dining area provide a wonderful, homelike feel.
